One Dr. may be aiming for a true "ideal" whereas the other is aiming for "good enough."

The "idealist" may be more specialized in his practice, and only interested in working with those patients for whom health is a BIG DEAL, and who are willing to do WHATEVER IT TAKES to have the best health they are capable of achieving.

The one who's focused on "good enough" health may be (either by choice or by force) dealing with a much broader slice of the population, including a majority who don't really care, and who are highly un-likely to follow "Dr's orders."

Several years ago I was hired to manage a crew. I was told in no uncertain terms that perfection was demanded. I thought, "I can do that!" What they didn't know was: I'm a perfectionist.

When I started killing morale by forcing the crew to fix every little detail, my boss took me aside and asked, "What the heck are you trying to do here?!? You're taking this way too far!"

It turns out, they were used to telling people their standard was perfection - knowing full well that no one would take that to mean true perfection! When I heard that order, I took it seriously and tried to push the crew to a quantum-leap-new-level. It was way too much for them.

Much like I thought "normal" was perfection - and therefor pushed for a significantly higher standard than anyone else thought possible, perhaps the one Dr. is pushing for a much higher (healthier) standard than the other. It's still achievable, but the others may not think so.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
