I would have rebuked my children had they come up with something so arrogant, and condescending. And shame on me if I had encouraged such divisiveness.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6888282.post-32245657398905413372009-05-20T15:23:05.179-06:002009-05-20T15:23:05.179-06:00I appreciate Luke's comments. I too was struck by how very prideful Swanson sounds as he's chiding his audience for their pride. Amazing that his professor's couldn't see it because it comes through loud and clear here and I've only met him once. He also seems awfully sure about what God wants me to do and I'm automatically suspicious of anyone who claims to know God's mind that well. Unfortunately this seems to be prevailing attitude over at CHEC - they have received the revelation and are getting a little exasperated with those lesser lights who haven't quite grasped the vision yet. I recall Homeschool Day at the Capitol a year or two back, where Bill Roach stood on the Capitol steps and proclaimed Psalm 2 to the legislators with heavy emphasis on the last three verses (Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry and you be destroyed in your way, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.) Hardly the best way to win friends and influence people and this is the face of homeschooling before a legislature that can not be called overwhelmingly in favor of what we are doing. It's this whole direction that has made my wife and I decide to sever our ties with CHEC. In keeping with the theme of the Proverbs
18 Pride goes before destruction,
a haughty spirit before a fall.(Proverbs 16:18) and
23 A wise man's heart guides his mouth,
and his lips promote instruction.
24 Pleasant words are a honeycomb,
sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.
25 There is a way that seems right to a man,
but in the end it leads to death. The flexibility and freedom...A couple of thoughts:

The flexibility and freedom of homeschooling is certainly incredible. But I'd question why Swanson feels like we have to homeschool in order to "pray without ceasing"... aren't we called to do that regardless of where we are? This is an example of Swanson's misapplication of the Christian life: We should go out and make disciples, not hide away to maintain our "holiness."

And, for as much as he talks about humility and the call of Proverbs to speak graciously and without sarcasm, I can't help but feel the pride of encouraging one's children to "wave to the jailbus" and mock the children on it.

Sawnson's take on the Republic--of which I've only read a few small sections--is interesting. Most educators I've read say that parental/close mentor involvement is vital to a child's success. So I think he may be using selection bias to say that our modern educational system is out to destroy the family. There certainly are aspects of it that are, but there is still a recognition of the importance of parents' involvement.

I love your point about Swanson's knowledge of Proverbs as the kind that puffs up. I get exactly the same vibe.

...and while I could go on and point out many more little issues with what Swanson says, I'll sum it up with this: For as much as Swanson talks about Proverbs, he sure doesn't seem to apply them.

Does the fruit of his life--or several other of the guys at this event--really reflect the Spirit of God? I don't see many examples of true Godly character here. Plenty of good teaching--as well as some really, really bad teaching--lots of sensationalistic talk, and many--I think--examples of Luke 11:46.

Humility? I don't see it.

But what do I know? I'm just one of those "kids that are out [here] blogging" [smile]. Not that I mind insults too much, but I think it is yet another example of Swanson not walking his talk. Unfortunately, I know that I do not set the kind of example that I should either... May I grow in that daily.

~LukeLuke Holzmannhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07799632321310461828noreply@blogger.com
