I don't k...Dear John,
I don't know "how you FIGHT this", other than by NOT fighting!

It's quite a while ago - on a Thursday, barely two weeks before the German army's invasion of Poland during the last weekend of August 1939. (Because of all the propaganda against Poland, we fully expected that Hitler's Wehrmacht was poised to do exactly what they DID do!)
I had said my farewells to parents and brothers at the Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof (main railroad station) and was ALONE on a crawded train to Frankfurt/Main, to meet a group of people - all strangers - with whom I was to travel to London, as part of the Kindertransport.
I had traveled alone on German trains before: An extended vacation trip to my grandparents in Apolda, Thüringen, was a major occasion. So, going to England I knew all about being prepared to show my valid ticket and confriming my intended desination. I had heard about Jewish emigrants carrying expensive Leica and/or Contax cameras (to sell for cash upon arrival) and occasionally having them confiscated as "ilegal exports". I carried a cheap small camera and was taking pictures of sights we passed - sights like the Rhein river and the city (and cathedral) of Cologne, etc. When an inspector came by for ticket (and contraband?) check, I alsways showed my camera — and was waved off, even told "of not interest".
The film was developed and the 'negatives' printed after my arrival in England .. and saved in a suitable small album.
To sum up my conclusion:
ACCEPT the situation as "unobjectionable" and "normal" (or at least NEARLY so!). The TSA guys and women KNOW full well it isn't "normal": They are pledged to "doing their job" -
MAKE IT EASY FOR THEM -
DON'T STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD.
and you will have no serious problems.

Love and best wishes,
DadErnestnoreply@blogger.com
