American civics test . . . how well can you do?

Do Americans have any reason to sing about how free and brave we are? Anyone prepared to stand up for liberty?

Three basic questions. How would you answer?

  1. What are the three branches of the federal government?

  2. What is the electoral college?

  3. According to the U.S. Constitution, who has the right to declare war?
See how well you do compared to these random people "off the street."

By the way, the answers:

  1. The executive, the legislative, and the judicial.

  2. The representatives (electors) who formally elect the President and Vice President of the United States. --In general, they are expected to cast their votes according to predetermined patterns established by the states. (Very interesting and informative article on Wikipedia.)

  3. Only the Congress--by agreement of both houses. (Sadly, however, the practice, by and large, has been, more or less, to circumvent the Constitution by simply having the president send troops into combat without a declaration of war . . . and then seeking Congressional approval after-the-fact. --Again, Wikipedia has a good article.
